, shaking his head. what does this tell you that joe biden was doing? >> well, different people are going to interpret this differently. certainly, it comes across as dismissive. joe biden has some of the most authentic nonverbals. comes across as very real. it's both a blessing and a curse. >> what he's doing here with his hands. what is this all about? >> this is interesting because he's smiling, but what he's doing with his hands where he's pulling them up close to his face and acatually touching his face is something that you do when you're feeling a little bit threatened and you're protecting yourself. >> you're telling me, amy, paul ryan raises his eyebrows a lot and tell me what you mean. >> see, his eyebrows are raised and his brow is furrowed and his eyes are wide and all of that indicates surprise. this is the facial expression that is universally associated with surprise across culture. the problem is that when you overuse it, it is as if you're writing an e-mail in all caps. >> now, we're talking about he looked nervous and anxious. here, though, you think this is significant

to an older version of paul ryan's medicare version, which is very different from the 2011 version that joe biden cited. he was very good at doing that kind of thing to make it seem like he was fact checking, whereas he was introducing extraneous information, sometimes false information. but i would agree with maria that joe biden was effective and i think democrats were definitely very pleased with his performance. i also think that republicans were generally pretty pleased with paul ryan's performance. so i'd overall say that you could come away from that debate wi many different impressions. >> there was an interesting cnn orc poll that i wanted to share with both of you. the question was, is ryan qualified to be president? and the answer, 60% said yes. and 38% said no. so maria, what do you say to that? >> well, i think that he's right in terms of a lot of republicans -- and i think democrats, too, saw that ryan held his own. he had a solid performance. and so i think that judging from that, a lot of voters said well, you know, if this ticket is elected, then paul ryan would certainly h

apparently made the choice that it was unworthy of him and unworthy of the audience. will joe bidenring it up next week in his vice presidential debate? he may. we'll find out. >> it might have been a strategy, too. maria what do you think? >> i actually think it was a missed opportunity, randi. he should have brought it up. but i will guarantee you that democrats, including joe biden, will absolutely continue to bring it up, because after he said he thought he was wrong, or before he said he thought he was wrong, he doubled down on those remarks two or three times before he realized it was really hurting him in the polls. and we're talking about latinos this morning. majority of latinos are in that 47%, including my mother and father and a lot of people in my family. so that's why it has hurt him and that's why he thought he needs to come out and say it was a mistake, but we're not going to let him run away from it. >> always nice to see both of you. thank you. >> you, too, randi. thank you. >> thank you. >> be sure to tune in for a special cnn documentary, "latino in america: courting their
